Doug Colby

Vice President

Initially, the Meas Conservation District (MCD) was an unknown to me. I was invited to attend a few MCD meetings and liked what they were doing and trying to do. Their plans and programs looked like something worth getting involved with.

Education wise I have a Bachelor of Science degree from the Colorado School of Mines in Petroleum Engineering and a Master of Science degree from Utah State University in Civil and Environmental Engineering.  Both degrees have helped me see the importance of protecting and preserving our natural resources while using them as efficiently as possible.  After retiring from the Oil and Gas industry, my wife and I bought an orchard that grows cherries, apricots, peaches, plums, grapes, and apples.

The Orchard has brought new areas of concern, weather, pest control, water, and soil health. The weather is what it is, we adjust and adapt to it, but pest control, water, and soil health can all be optimized.  What the MCD is doing to improve soil health really caught my attention and got me involved.  Knowledge is critical to solving any problem, not dogma. Their data gathering and program implementation will be substantial in establishing a knowledge base.  Good soil health leads to good tree health which in turn enables the trees to more successfully fight pests. MCD is participating with other groups to keep west slope water on the West Slope, which is critical.  It is a privilege to work with the MCD.
